Methodology & data sources

Where the data comes from

Every charger listing comes from the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) station locator, run by the U.S. Department of Energy (through the National Laboratory of the Rockies, formerly NREL). We download all open, public U.S. electric charging stations from the AFDC API (latest download: Oct 21, 2026, 83,377 stations) and keep the ones at hotels.

How we decide a station is at a hotel

We leave out Tesla Superchargers and other public fast-charging hubs, even when they sit on hotel property, plus ski areas, RV parks and campgrounds. Several AFDC entries at the same property (for example a Tesla Destination entry and a J1772 entry) are combined into one hotel listing. The original DOE records are listed under “Source records” on each listing. We keep a short list of manual corrections, each with a written reason.

What “last confirmed” means

“Last confirmed” is AFDC's date_last_confirmed field: the date AFDC last verified the station's details with the charging network or station owner. When a listing combines several DOE records, we show the most recent date. A recent date doesn't guarantee the charger works today, and an older date doesn't mean it's gone.

Pricing and access notes

Pricing and access text is shown exactly as DOE has it. “Pricing note says free” means the DOE pricing field contains the word “free”. Parking, valet or resort fees may still apply. When there's no pricing, we say “Not listed” rather than guess.

What we don't do

Who runs this site

EV Overnight is an independent project. It isn't affiliated with the U.S. Department of Energy, any hotel company or any charging network. No hotel can pay to be listed or ranked. See our affiliate disclosure & privacy page for how the site may earn money.

Updates and corrections

We re-download DOE data and refresh published pages regularly. To correct a charger record, open its “DOE record” link and report the change to AFDC, which feeds every app built on this data. Corrections to our hotel matching are applied in our next update. You can also email [email protected].
